LED and LCD display glossary
The terms you will find in a quote, a data sheet or a conversation with our team, explained plainly.
Distance in millimeters between the center of one LED and the next. The smaller the pitch, the higher the resolution and the price per square meter. Rule of thumb: minimum viewing distance in meters ≈ pitch in millimeters.
Unit of brightness (candelas per square meter). Indoor: 600 to 1,200 nits. Outdoor in direct sun: 5,500 to 7,500 nits.
Surface Mounted Device. Technology where each pixel is a three-color LED mounted on the surface. The most used indoors and outdoors.
Chip On Board. LED chips go directly on the board and are covered with resin. Allows very fine pitches (0.9 to 1.56 mm) and a resistant surface.
Glue On Board. SMD module with a protective resin layer over the LEDs. Withstands impact, dust and humidity.
Fine-pitch displays, usually below 2 mm, to be viewed up close in boardrooms, control rooms and studios.
The smallest unit of the screen: a board with LEDs, usually 320 x 160 mm. Several modules form a cabinet.
Metal frame that groups modules, power supplies and receiving card. Common sizes: 640 x 480, 960 x 960, 500 x 500 and 500 x 1000 mm.
Times per second the screen redraws the image. 3,840 Hz avoids flicker on television cameras and phones.
Brightness levels each color can reproduce. 14 or 16 bits give smooth gradients and deep blacks.
Card inside each cabinet that receives the signal and distributes it to the modules.
Card or box that takes the video signal from the computer or processor and sends it to the receiving cards over network cable.
Device that scales, crops and distributes the signal to the screen. Chosen by pixel capacity.
Media player with content management that sends the schedule to the screen over the network or 4G, without a computer.
Protection rating against dust and water. IP65 is the outdoor standard; IP30 and IP43 are indoor.
Modules are removed from the front of the screen. Required when there is no rear access.
Modules are removed from the back. Requires a walkway or rear space; usually cheaper.
Large screen made of several panels or cabinets showing a single image.
Video wall made of 49 or 55 inch LCD panels with thin bezel. Sold per panel and used for continuous monitoring.
Edge of the LCD panel. The thinner the bezel (0.88 to 3.5 mm), the less visible the joint between panels.
Screen with spaced LED strips that let light through. Installed on shop windows and glass facades.
Modules on a flexible base that bend for columns, cylinders and creative shapes.
1.2 mm LED film that adheres to existing glass and shows content that seems to float. It is not a holographic fan.
Rental screens for events, with lightweight cabinets, quick locks and flight cases.
Digital Out Of Home: digital advertising in public spaces, such as billboards and shopping mall screens.
Horizontal and vertical angle from which the image is seen with correct brightness and color. Typical: 140° to 160°.
Power per square meter with a white image (maximum) and with normal content (average). Used to size the electrical supply.
Colombia’s Technical Regulation for Electrical Installations. Every electrical installation of a screen must comply with it.
Colombian Electrical Code. Defines conductors, protections and voltage drops.
Individual adjustment of brightness and color of each LED so the screen looks uniform.
Project where one responsible party delivers the screen working: design, supply, structure, installation, content and support.
Full support before, during and after installation, including content, training and maintenance.
